In honor of The Weeknd, who released his latest album DAWN FM over the weekend, I put all of the Weekend's news and events into one gusher of an article. The Wild won somehow, the Vikings won the battle of the sh*% teams, and the Timberwolves are hot again.
What a win from the Vikings and no I am not talking about the game, I am talking about the huge W that Viking fans just received today.
The Vikings announced today that they fired Head Coach Mike Zimmer and General Manager Rick Spielman. It hopefully is the start of a complete overhaul to this franchise. It will be interesting to see what happens with Cousins and the rest of the Vikings.
Will they go for a complete rebuild and complete trades for picks? Or will they simply change management, but leave the team alone?
Only time will tell, but I for one am glad that the Zimmer era is over and hopefully this is the start of brighter days ahead for Viking fans.
I would love for the Vikings to go after Brian Flores who was the head coach of the Dolphins.
The Minnesota Wild somehow managed to pull out the impressive come-back shootout win against the Capitals. They were missing nearly 50% of their opening night lineup in the win.
The game was a gusty and gritty performance, however, the Wild did get some puck luck that helped them get back into the game.
During a delayed penalty on the Wild, the Capitals were in the offensive zone and Hagelin passed back to the blue line, but the defense missed and the puck went all the way down into the empty net ( the goalie went to the bench to get the extra attacker). It was truly a crazy goal that will happen once every thousand times, but it jumpstarted the Wild.
It was recorded as Foligno's 100th career goal, and what a way to score your 100th goal.
The Wild had great performances by Gaudreau, Zuccarello, and Kahkonen to help lead them to the victory.
The win improved the Wild to 21-10-2 on the season and they are on a two-game winning streak without half of their lineup, that's impressive, to say the least.
They currently sit in fourth place in the Central Division tied for third with the Avalanche with 44 points, Colorado has two games in hand on Minnesota. The Wild have three games in hand on the Predators and Blues who sit in first and second in that order.
Minnesota will play Friday at home against the Ducks. The Wild are hopeful that the extended time off will give their injured guys time to heal up. Fans are hopeful they will see reinforcements Friday.
They are expected to have Greenway, Duhaime, and Goligoski back from Covid protocols. Eriksson Ek is also expected to be back for the Friday game. Kaprizov is a possibility for Friday's game, but I can see him missing the game because the Wild will want to make sure he doesn't return too early and get re-injured like what happened with Spurgeon.
Rossi was sent back down to Iowa to continue to grow his game and get playing time. Boldy was placed on the taxi squad for the time being.
The Timberwolves are currently on a four-game win streak and have climbed back to .500 on the season with a record of 20-20. They have a great opportunity to improve to 21-20 on Tuesday against the Pelicans at home in what would be the exact middle point in the season for the Wolves.
What better way to end the first half of what was a crazy beginning to the season than to get over .500 to start the second half of the season.
Three of the four wins were over OKC and Houston which are two teams that the Wolves should beat every night, but that doesn't take away from what the Wolves are doing.
They are feeling it. KAT is putting up some crazy numbers lately, he dropped 40 points in the win over Houston. ANT is the energy of the team and DLO is getting his shot to fall lately which could make this team very dangerous.
DLO has struggled with his shot this season, but lately, he has been impressive. He has scored 30, 31, and 33 points over the last three games.
Vanderbilt is the Power Forward the Timberwolves need and he is already here. I firmly believe that he will only continue to get better. In his last three games he had stats of 30 points/13 boards, 28 points/16 boards, and 31 points/19 boards.
This team is crazy inconsistent, but a big part of that inconsistency was due to huge amounts of guys missing due to injuries and Covid.
They are now on the end of the Covid bug and hopefully, they will be healthy for the remainder of the season. Hopefully, the injuries that occurred in the first half of the season don't repeat themselves.
If the starting five can play 15 consecutive games or more together, we could see this Timberwolves team battling for a secured playoff spot instead of the play-in-tournament at the end of the season.
They have the skill, they have the talent, they have the coaching, and now they are starting to get their groove.
They sit in 8th place, but they are only one game back from 6th place and two games back from 5th place.
